READING, Pa. (Field Hockey) – The fourth-seeded Messiah Falcons shut out the second-seeded Alvernia Crusaders by a score of 3-0 on Saturday to win their eighth-straight Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Championship.
Messiah (14-6) and Alvernia (13-8) played 16 minutes of scoreless field hockey before the Falcons’ Moriah Pfautz scored her ninth goal of the season for a 1-0 advantage for the road team. Commonwealth Rookie of the Year Carissa Gehman assisted on the goa.
Three minutes later, Gehman scored her 25th goal of the season after deking out the goalkeeper to give Messiah a 2-0 lead before halftime.
In the second half, the Falcons extended their lead in the 46th minute on a goal by Megan Prall. Prall was set up by Becky Ely for her first goal of the season.
Messiah’s goalkeeper Carly Day made three saves while facing six shots. Alvernia’s Erin Wunsch made five saves while facing 11 shots.
Day was named the Commonwealth Conference Championship Most Valuable Player.
Messiah earns the Commonwealth Conference’s automatic qualifier (AQ) to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 10:30 p.m. at www.NCAA.com.
