CHESTER, Pa. – The Elizabethtown College women and Widener University men both defending champions opened up early leads after two events on the opening night of the 2014 Middle Conference Championships.
Traci Tempone added another gold to her already strong resume in the 10,000 meter run. The senior posted a time of 38:35.34 edging out DeSales’ Jessica Curry by just over 10 seconds. Cara Guth finished in third just behind her teammate but the Blue Jays grabbed the fourth, fifth and sixth spots to take a commanding lead.
In the other event of the night the 4x800 relay the Lebanon Valley team of Lauren Decker, Kelsey Patrick, Dana Stockdale, and Cynthia Adams set a new MAC Championship clocking in with a time of 9:16.4. The Dutchmen beat out the teams from Elizabethtown, Misericordia, and DeSales which round out the top four finishers.
The Widener men’s team opened up an 11 point margin on second place Elizabethtown posting 27 points after two events. In the 10,000 meter run the Pride saw four individuals score including junior Seamus McCillogh who claimed the gold with a time of 32:26.70.
Widener’s relay team also had a strong showing in the men’s 4x800 relay finishing second. The top time went to the team of Sam Brooks, Jon Anderson, Michael Twist, and Matt Rever who finished with a time of 7:46.72. Widener, Messiah, and DeSales all finished within 10 seconds of the Blue Jays.
Events continue tomorrow at Widener Unviersity when the Men’s Decathlon and Women’s Heptathlon get underway at 10 AM and 10:15 AM respectively.
