Albright edged Misericordia by seven points for its fifth-straight conference title

YORK, Pa. (Men’s Swimming) – On the final day of the 2015 Middle Atlantic Conference Swimming Championship, the Albright Lions were once again crowned the conference champions. The Lions collected 515 points to edge Misericordia (508 points) for their fifth-straight conference title.
Widener’s sophomore Ian Gaynor was named the 2015 David B. Eavenson Award winner as the MAC men’s swimmer of the year. Gaynor led the men’s standings with 60 points with three individual victories, including a MAC Championship record and an NCAA provisional time. The sophomore won the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. Gaynor was the 2014 MAC Rookie of the Year.
Messiah’s Dakota Schmalz was named the 2015 MAC Men’s Swimming Rookie of the Year. Schmalz finished third in the men’s individual standings with 55 points. Schmalz won the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard IM.
Misericordia’s head coach Matt VanDerMeid was named the 2015 MAC Men’s Swimming Coach of the Year.
1,650 FREESTYLE
Albright’s Rick Sutton (Sr.) wins his fourth-straight MAC 1,650-yard freestyle title in a time of 16:17.16. His time was just shy of an NCAA provisional cut (16:16.65). Hood’s Cameron Rogers (So.) finished in second in a time of 16:28.38, and Messiah’s Aaron Eckman (Jr.) took third in a time of 16:49.79.
200 BACKSTROKE
Misericordia’s Joe Grzech (Fr.) won the men’s 200-yard back stroke title in a time of 1:52.62. Hood’s Chris Gardner (So.) took second place in a time of 1:53.10, and Misericordia’s Patrick O’Dell (Jr.) placed third in a time of 1:57.26.
100 FREESTYLE
Widener’s Ian Gaynor (So.) repeated as the men’s 100-yard freestyle champion with a time of 45.59 seconds for an NCAA provisional time. He also recorded a NCAA ‘B’ cut in the prelims with a 45.69 seconds swim. Misericordia’s Brad Thomas (Sr.) finished second in a time of 47.02 seconds, and Albright’s Alex Bauer was third in a time of 47.19 seconds.
200 BREASTSTROKE
Misericordia’s Thomas Scott (So.) repeated as the men’s 200-yard breaststroke champion with a time of 2:07.14. Albright’s Ken Richardson (So.) was close behind in second place with a time of 2:07.27. Misericordia’s John Brady (Fr.) was third with a time of 2:11.13.
200 BUTTERFLY
Messiah’s Dakota Schmalz (Fr.) won the men’s 200-yard butterfly title with a time of 1:55.17. Lebanon Valley’s Ian Lloyd (Fr.) finished in second just .08 seconds behind with a time of 1:55.25. Arcadia’s Timothy Graham (Jr.) finished in third in a time of 1:56.22.
Graham broke the 43-yard MAC Championship record set in 1972 by Johns Hopkins’ Bill Milne (1:55.10) with a time of 1:55.06 in the prelims.
400 FREESTYLE RELAY
Widener won the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:05.08 to set a new MAC Championship record. The record was held by Albright (3:05.71) since 2014. The Pride swam in the following order: Ian Gaynor (So.), Tom Platt (Fr.), Jeffrey Hicks (So.) and Michael Grajek (So.).
Misericordia finished in second in a time of 3:09.82, and Hood took third in a time of 3:10.00
