YORK, Pa. (Baseball) –
The No. 2 Alvernia Crusaders defeated the No. 7 Catholic Cardinals in the night cap on day one of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional. Alvernia’s Kevin Becker-Menditto tied the NCAA Division III saves record with his 46th career save.

Catholic (27-15-1) had bases loaded in the top of the first. The Cardinals scored one run on a fielder’s choice and then stranded two runners to take an early 1-0 lead.

Alvernia (33-12) tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the first with runners on first and third. Zach Nadolny drove in Ben Dubas from third and sent Ben Sawyer from first to third with a two-out single.

The Cardinals drove in one run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead.

Alvernia tied the game on a throwing error to first base on a bunt by Daniel George. The Crusaders then took the lead with a RBI groundout by Richie Riccardi.

Kevin Becker-Menditto entered the game with two outs in the top of the ninth, and struck out the only batter he saw to earn his 46th career save to tie the NCAA Division III record.

Catholic will now play No. 3 Johns Hopkins Thursday in Game 6 at 1:15 p.m.

Alvernia will play No. 6 Misericordia Thursday in Game 8 at 7:45 p.m.
