YORK, Pa. (Baseball) – The No. 3 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays got revenge against the No. 6 Misericordia Cougars on Friday night in an elimination game by a score of 7-5. The Cougars beat the Blue Jays, 6-4, on the first day of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional. Johns Hopkins advances go Saturday’s Game 13 at 11 a.m.
Misericordia’s Jeremy DeCotiis hit a two-out bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the second inning to give the Cougars (31-13) a 3-0 lead.
Johns Hopkins (30-12-1) scored five runs on three hits in the top of the 5th inning. Colin McCarthy capped the rally with a two-run home run that bounced off the top of the 38-foot wall and over for a 5-3 lead.
The Blue Jays added one run in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 6-3.
The Cougars scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Johns Hopkins added one insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Misericordia made it interesting with bases loaded after 11-straight balls pitched by the Blue Jays, but the Cougars were only able to get two runs to fall 7-5.
McCarthy finished the game going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, 2 RBIs and one run scores. Chris Casey went 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Johns Hopkins will now play No. 2 Alvernia in Game 13 on Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to the championship game against No. 4 Salisbury at 2:30 p.m.
