YORK, Pa. (Baseball) – The No. 4 Salisbury Sea Gulls will head back to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship for a second year in a row. The Sea Gulls defeated the No. 2 Alvernia Crusaders by a score of 12-2 in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region Championship Game on Saturday at Santander Stadium.
Salisbury advances to the Division III Baseball Championship in Appleton, Wisconsin at Fox Cities Stadium from May 22-26. The Sea Gulls won the Mideast Regional last year in Marietta, Ohio.
Salisbury (33-4-1) had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but were only able to come away with one run to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Salisbury had bases loaded again and came away with three runs on three hits to increase their lead to 4-0.
Alvernia (35-14) had bases loaded with no outs in the top of the third inning and scored one run on three hits to cut the deficit to 4-1.
After a two-and-a-half hour rain delay, play resumed at 6:30 p.m. (game started at 3:10 p.m.)
Salisbury scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 5-1.
Alvernia had bases loaded again in the top of the fifth inning, but scored just one run to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Sea Gulls added six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth for an 11-2 lead. Tyler Hrycak hit a two-run home run to left center field for the fifth home run of the regional.
In the top of the sixth inning with two outs, the Crusaders had bases loaded for a third time but were not able to score any runs.
Salisbury added one run in the sixth inning for a 12-2 lead.
The Sea Gulls’ Pete Grasso was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. A total of 12 players, including Grasso, were named to the All-Tournament Team. The team can be found
