Widener Claims Fourth-Straight MAC Men’s Cross Country Championship

Widener senior Ernie Pitone wins men’s individual title for a third-straight year

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Men’s Cross Country) –
The Widener Pride claimed their fourth-straight, seventh overall, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Starry Athletic Complex on the campus of Messiah College. The Pride’s senior Ernie Pitone won the men’s race for the third-straight year.
 
Widener had three runners finish in the top-5 to earn All-MAC First Team honors. The Pride scored 82 points to also claim the team title by three points over DeSales and Messiah. Widener now has seven all-time men’s team titles and a conference best 16 individual titles.
 
DeSales and Messiah both finished with 85 points, but DeSales earned the tiebreaker, 3-2, in head-to-head finishes among their top-5 finishers to take second-place. The Bulldogs had one top-10 finisher and two top-20 finishers, while the Falcons had the third-place finisher and two top-20 finishers.
 
Misericordia (108 points) and Stevenson (117 points) rounded out the top-five teams.
 
Pitone won the 2016 race by 38 seconds over the second-overall finisher with a time of 25:31.8. The senior won the 2015 race by 34 seconds, the 2014 race by 12 seconds and finished runner-up in 2013. Pitone collected his third-straight MAC Runner of the Year award to go with his 2013 MAC Rookie of the Year award. Widener’s senior Will McDermott finished in second place for the second-straight year with a time of 26:09.1.
 
Messiah’s sophomore Ben Schott took third in a time of 26:24.1, and Misericordia’s Sean Luzzi took fourth in a time of 26:43.2.
 
The 2016 MAC Rookie of the Year, freshman Frank Livolsi of Widener, finished in fifth in a time of 26:48.9.
 
Widener head coach Vince Touey was named 2016 MAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
