MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Women’s Cross Country) – The DeSales Bulldogs claimed their first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Women’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Starry Athletic Complex on the campus of Messiah College. The Bulldogs’ junior Veronica Wheeler claimed the individual title by 22 seconds to be the fifth DeSales women’s runner to win a MAC Cross Country individual title.
 
DeSales had three runners finish in the top-4, four in the top-7 and five in the top-19 to earn 34 points for its first-ever women’s team title. Messiah took second-place with 76 points with two top-10 finishes and two top-20 finishes. Misericordia, last year’s champion, finished third with 84 points and four top-20 finishes.
 
Lebanon Valley (121 points) and Widener (163 points) rounded out the top-five teams.
 
Wheeler won the 2016 race by 22 seconds over the second-overall finisher with a time of 22:21.8. Wheeler finished the 2015 race in second, and the 2014 race in third to improve one spot each season. She earned the 2016 MAC Runner of the Year award to go along with her 2014 MAC Rookie of the Year award.
 
Wilkes’ sophomore Morgan Jones came in second with a time of 22:43.1, while DeSales’ sophomore and 2015 MAC Rookie of the Year Angelina Biondo took third in a time of 23:00.06. The Bulldogs’ sophomore Meaghan Driscoll took fourth in a time of 23:13.4.
 
The 2015 MAC Rookie of the Year, freshman Tara Johnson of King’s, finished in fifth with a time of 23:30.3.
 
DeSales’ head coach Gordon Hornig was named the 2016 MAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
