YORK, Pa. (Swimming) – The third day of the 2016 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships were completed on Friday at the Graham Aquatic Center.
Through 12 events, Messiah takes a commanding lead with 566 total points in the women’s standings. The Falcons have won nine golds in the first 12 events. Widener is in second-place with 383 points. Misericordia is in third with 277 points, and Arcadia (230 points) and Hood (181 points) round out the top-five teams through three days.
Widener remains in first-place in the men’s standings through 12 events with 351 points. Albright is in second with 305 points. Arcadia and Messiah are tied for third with 272 points, and Misericordia is in fifth with 264 points.

200-YARD FREESTYLE RELAY
Women
Messiah’s Tara Freeman, Cassie Cotton, Emily Reale and Katie Wingert won gold with a time of 1:36.29. The Falcons won gold for the third-straight season in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Their time is the fastest championship final time, bettering their own time of 1:37.98 set last season. Widener finished in second with a time of 1:39.21, and Misericordia took third with a time of 1:40.93.
Men
Widener’s Ian Gaynor, AJ Green, Tom Platt and Jeffrey Hicks won gold in a time of 1:23.81. Their time is the fastest championship final time, besting Albright’s 2014 time of 1:24.08. Albright took second with a time of 1:25.85, and Misericordia finished third in a time of 1:27.12
400-YARD INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY (IM)
Women
Messiah’s Emily Reale won gold with a time of 4:36.41. Reale defeated the 2015 champion, Dani Blass of Misericordia, who finished in second in a time of 4:41.21. Blass still holds the fastest championship final time (4:34.90). Messiah’s Britta Heath took third in a time of 4:46.13.
Men
Messiah’s Dakota Schmalz wins the 400-yard IM for the second-straight season. Schmalz won with a time of 4:11.82. Hood’s Chris Gardner took second with a time of 4:13.23, and Misericordia’s Patrick O’Dell took third in a time of 4:14.93.
100-YARD BUTTERFLY
Women
Lebanon Valley’s Jan Ikeda swam her second NCAA “B” cut time of the day in the 100-yard butterfly. Ikeda won gold with a time of 56.50 seconds after seeding first in the preliminaries with a time of 56.69 seconds. Ikeda is now a three-time champion in the event, also winning in 2012 and 2014. Messiah’s Cassie Cotton took second in a time of 57.45 seconds, and teammate Tara Freeman finished third in a time of 57.56 seconds.
Men
Widener’s AJ Green won gold with a time of 51.49 seconds. Lebanon Valley’s Ian Lloyd took second in a time of 52.14 seconds, and Lycoming’s Josh Thomas finished third in a time of 52.22 seconds.
200-YARD FREESTYLE
Women
Messiah’s Katie Wingert repats as the women’s 200-yard freestyle champion. Wingert’s time of 1:54.07 is the new championship finals best time, bettering MAC Hall of Famer and Gettysburg’s Lynne Cassidy time of 1:55.16 set in 1991. Widener’s Christine Kunzler took second in a time of 1:56.47 and teammate Melaney Heald took third in a time of 1:56.92.
Men
Widener’s Ian Gaynor wins gold for the third-straight year. Gaynor also set the new championship final fastest time with a time of 1:42.02, bettering Elizabethtown’s Casey Moore’s time of 1:42.20 set in 2001. Misericordia’s Joe Grzech took second in a time of 1:44.63, and Widener’s Tom Platt took third in a time of 1:45.03.
100-YARD BREASTSTROKE
Women
Arcadia’s Samantha Carpenter captured gold with a time 1:06.80. The freshman secured the top seed in the finals with a preliminary time of 1:06.15. Widener’s Erin Neugebauer took second in a time of 1:08.02, and Messiah’s Gaby Brubaker took third in a time of 1:08.51.
Men
Albright’s Tyler Chamberlin captured gold with an NCAA “B” cut time of 57.12 seconds. Misericordia’s Thomas Scott took second with a time of 58.26 seconds, and Hood’s BJ Daisey took third in a time of 59.03 seconds.
100-YARD BACKSTROKE
Women
Messiah’s Joelle Williamson won gold in a time of 1:00.55. Misericordia’s Marissa Gombosi took second in a time of 1:00.61, and Widener’s Annie Walker took third in a time of 1:00.82.
Men
Widener’s AJ Green won gold with an NCAA “B” cut time of 50.87 seconds. Misericordia’s Joe Grzech took second with a time of 52.36 seconds, and Hood’s Chris Gardner took third with a time of 52.47 seconds.
