Eastern Captures Third MAC Women’s Golf Title

Emily Gilbert won Alvernia’s second individual title and conference Golfer of the Year award

HERSHEY, Pa. (Women’s Golf) –
The Eastern Eagles captured their third MAC Women’s Golf Championship in the last five years by 16 strokes over two-time reigning conference champion Stevenson on Sunday at the Hershey Country Club (HCC). Alvernia sophomore Emily Gilbert captured the Crusaders’ second individual title by 18 strokes over the runner-up.
 
The Eagles now have the most team titles at the conference championship in its seven-year history with three. Stevenson, who finished runner-up this year, has two titles, while Albright and Alvernia each have one.
 
Eastern head coach Jason Badecki was named the 2017 MAC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.
 
Eastern finished the tournament with a team two-round score of 734 (+166). The Eagles shot a 369 on day two after shooting a 365 on the first day. Both scores were championship best scores on each day. Their lead over Stevenson went from four-strokes on day one to 16 after the completion of day two. The Mustangs finished runner-up with a two-day score of 750 (+182).
 
Alvernia (781 | +213) took third, Manhattanville (807 | +239) was fourth and Lebanon Valley (813 | +245) rounded out the top five. Albright (893 | +325), Misericordia (895 | +327) and Arcadia (896 | +328) also scored as teams.
 
Gilbert continued her dominance on the HCC East Course shooting the daily low for a second-straight day. The sophomore shot an 84 (+13) on day two to finish the tournament with a two-day score of 161 (+19). Gilbert was 18 strokes better than the runner-up, and was named the 2017 MAC Women’s Golfer of the Year.
 
In just the second year of the two-day women’s conference championship, Gilbert has the best two-day score in championship history by 13 strokes. Lebanon Valley’s Megan Kimmel won the 2016 title with a 174 (+32).
 
Eastern sophomore Sofia Frantz finished runner-up with a score of 179 (+37). The 2015 conference championship, junior Morgan Wirtz of Stevenson took third with a score of 180 (+38).
 
Eastern freshman Jaclyn D’Angelo finished in fourth with a score of 181 (+39). As the top rookie finisher, D’Angelo was named the 2017 MAC Women’s Golf Rookie of the Year.
 
Albright sophomore Heather MacQuarrie rounded out the top five and the All-MAC First Team with a two-day score of 182 (+40).
 
Earning a spot on the All-MAC Second Team (6th-10th-place), in respective order, were Lebanon Valley senior Megan Kimmel (183 | +41), Stevenson freshman Julia Kline (185 | +43), Eastern sophomore Summer Frantz (186 | +44), Alvernia junior Cayla McCarty (187 | +45) and Eastern senior Sarah Hart (188 | +46).
 
Five golfers were named All-MAC Honorable Mention for placing 11th-15th-place. Two golfers tied for 11th-place with a score of 189 (+47), including Lebanon Valley junior Kaitlyn Kennedy and Misericordia freshman Alexis Wyandt.
 
Three golfers tied for 13th-place with a score of 192 (+50), including Lycoming junior Hailey Fricke, Stevenson senior Emily Haas and Manhattanville sophomore Kendyl Nethercott.
 
Eastern will now head to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship held from May 9-12 at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
