YORK, Pa. (Baseball) – The sixth-seeded Elizabethtown Blue Jays defeated the seventh-seeded SUNY Maritime Privateers, 13-5, on Friday at PeoplesBank Park. SUNY Maritime was eliminated from the 2017 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional with the loss. Elizabethtown will play on Saturday at 10 a.m. in a second elimination game.
The Blue Jays’ Anthony Lippy went the distance, pitching a complete-game with 118 pitches, three strike outs, 17 ground outs and three fly outs.
SUNY Maritime (26-13) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, but Elizabethtown turned a double-play to end the inning.
Then Elizabethtown (28-16) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second inning. James Kantner opened the scoring with an RBI-single up the middle. Then both Frank Ragozzino and Kyle Fackler followed with an RBI of their own to extend the lead to 3-0. Ragozzino reached on a fielder’s choice, and Fackler singled through the right side.
The Privateers added two runs on three hits in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 3-2. Phil Russo hit a sacrifice fly with one out to get SUNY Maritime on the board. Then Antonio Diaz singled up the middle to score the Privateers’ second run of the inning.
The Blue Jays added 3 more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. But SUNY Maritime responded in the top of the fourth with a run to cut the deficit to 6-3.
Elizabethtown added four runs in the fourth and another run in both the fifth and the sixth innings for a 12-3 lead.
SUNY Maritime added a run in both the seventh inning and ninth innings, and Elizabethtown plated one run in the bottom of the eighth for the eventual 13-5 win.
Elizabethtown will face the loser of the game between No. 5 Alvernia and No. 1 Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 10 a.m.
