No. 5 Alvernia Eliminates No. 6 Elizabethtown, 11-1

YORK, Pa. (Baseball) – The fifth-seeded Alvernia Crusaders responded after Friday’s loss with an 11-1 victory over the sixth-seeded Elizabethtown Blue Jays on Saturday at PeolplesBank Park. The Blue Jays were eliminated from the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Crusaders will play again at 7:45 p.m.
The Crusaders’ Thomas Malik pitched a complete-game for the win. Malik allowed just six hits, one run and struck out two batters. He forced 11 groundouts and 11 flyouts, and only had 99 pitches.
Alvernia (30-14-2) got on the board first in the top of the third inning when Nathan Sides hit an RBI-single to the shortstop. The Crusaders then loaded the bases with two outs, and Ben Dubas hit a bases-clearing double to left centerfield to extend their lead to 4-0. Franco Esposito followed with a RBI-double of his own to increase the lead to 5-0. Alvernia finished the inning with five runs on five hits.
The Crusaders’ Matt Briner drove in Cameron Coons with an RBI-double in the top of the fifth inning. Then Esposito drove home Briner with an RBI-single up the middle to push the lead to 7-0. Alvernia loaded the bases with one out and recorded three more runs for a 10-0 lead. The Crusaders totaled the five runs on four hits.
Elizabethtown’s (28-17) Brian Portillo started the bottom of the fifth with a double to center field for the Blue Jays’ second hit of the game to get things going. Portillo scored Elizabethtown’s first run on a foul-out sacrifice fly by James Kantner.
Alvernia added a run in the sixth inning for the eventual 11-1 win.
The Crusaders will play the winner of the game between the No. 2 Shenandoah Hornets and the No. 8 Lesley Lynx at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Saturday. The game is an elimination game.
