Gilbert, Golden Wolves Lead After Day One of MAC Championship

Alvernia’s Emily Gilbert shot a 79 (+8) first-round score to lead the championship after day one for a second-straight season

HERSHEY, Pa. (Women’s Golf) –
The first day of the 2018 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Women’s Golf Championship was completed on Saturday at the Hershey Country Club. For the second-straight season Alvernia junior Emily Gilbert leads the field after the first day. Alvernia also leads the team standings heading into the final round.
 
Alvernia leads the team standings through one round with a score of 362 (+78). Stevenson is second with a score of 374 (+90), Eastern is in third with a score of 380 (+96), Arcadia is fourth with a score of 407 (+123) and Manhattanville rounds out the top-five with a score of 418 (+134).

Also scoring was Lebanon Valley (432), FDU-Florham (455) and Misericordia (465).
 
Gilbert led the field of 53 golfers with a first-round score of 79 (+8), which is two strokes off of her MAC Championship single-round record 77 (+6) set on day one of the 2017 conference championship. The Golden Wolves’ Cayla McCarty finished day one with an 83 (+12) to be positioned second. Eastern’s Summer Frantz is in third with an 84 (+13), and Stevenson’s Morgan Wirtz is fourth with a 91 (+20).

Four golfers are tied for fifth-place with a first-round score of 94 (+23), including Lebanon Valley’s Kaitlyn Kennedy, Manhattanville’s Kendyl Nethercott, and Stevenson’s Julia Kline and Laura Rentz. Rounding out the top-10 tied in ninth-place at 95 (+24) are Delaware Valley’s Rachel Brahler and Stevenson’s Elise Glauser.
 
The second and final round of the 2018 MAC Women’s Golf Championships is set to tee off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 22. The final pairings will be released on the championship central page Saturday evening.
