2017 MARCA Ethnic Minority Careers in Athletics Symposium

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Commissioner's Association (MARCA) Ethnic Minority Careers in Athletics Symposium (EMCAS) is developed for students who are aspiring to or just beginning a career in athletics. This program aims to enrich participants’ skills, expand their professional network and promote the recruitment and retention of ethnic minorities within athletics, including the intercollegiate setting.

Participants gain knowledge from a variety of interactive discussion sessions through various topics. They will also network with peers, coaches, and administrative staff.

LOCATION
The 2017 MARCA Ethnic Minority Coaching Symposium will take place in Glenside, Pa. at Arcadia University. Programming will primarily take place in the Arcadia University Commons. [campus map]

ELIGIBILITY
Any current student or recent graduate from a MARCA member institution who identifies as an ethnic minority may participate (includes graduate students and non-student-athletes). View the list of MARCA institutions here.

The symposium is limited to up to 70 participants. Participants shall be selected based on applications received by a review committee.

APPLICATIONS for the symposium have closed.

COST OF ATTENDING
The symposium is being funded through special diversity grants received from the NCAA Office of Inclusion, NCAA Division III, and several Division III conferences. These grants will cover travel for participants and programming costs including lunch and refreshments for all attendees. A small fee ($50) will be collected for any accepted participants who do not show up for the symposium.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS 
A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Holiday Inn Express Fort Washington for the night of Saturday, March 25, 2017 for those attendees that wish to stay the night before the symposium. The cost is $109/night plus taxes. Amenities include: complimentary breakfast buffet; free Wi-Fi throughout the entire hotel; modern guest rooms with Keurig coffee makers, mini-fridge, and microwave; and 24-hour coffee in the lobby. The cut-off date to reserve a room in the group rate is Thursday, March 9, 2017. Booking information will be distributed to accepted participants on February 21, 2017. Attendees are responsible for making their own reservations and paying for their accommodations.

MEET THE FACILITATORS

Nnenna Akotaobi
Swarthmore College: Associate Athletics Director/SWA/Deputy Title IX Coordinator

17363Nnenna Akotaobi has served as the Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Swarthmore College since the fall of 2012. Prior to Swarthmore, Akotaobi worked at Grinnell College, where she served as both the Coordinator for Diversity/Inclusion in Athletics and Assistant Coordinator for Athletic Facilities/Event Management. Prior her time at Grinnell, Akotaobi served as the Director of Championships/Assistant to the Commissioner at the Midwest Conference (MWC), a position supported by the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship Grant. Akotaobi is a 2009 graduate of the University of Denver, where she was a Division I student-athlete on the Pioneers' basketball team. A native of Thornton, Colo., Akotaobi is member of numerous national committees and organizations. She is currently chair of the NCAA Minority Opportunity & Interests Committee and a member of the NCAA Division III Management Council, National Association of Colligate Women’s Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), Minority Opportunities Athletic Association (MOAA) and Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) and is a 2010 graduate of the NACWAA/NCAA Institute for Administrative Advancement.

Ken Andrews
Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC): Executive Director

17364Ken Andrews enters his 16th year as the Middle Atlantic Conference's Executive Director. Prior to assuming this position, Andrews was Director of Athletics at Macalester College. He has had other administrative experience as a high school director of athletics and with the Close Up Foundation (Washington, D.C.). Andrews started his career as a high school social studies teacher and coach of volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball. He has held a variety of coaching positions at Hale High School (Raleigh, N.C.), Oyster River High School (Durham, N.H.), the University of New Hampshire, and Macalester College. His highest coaching honor was 1983 New Hampshire Coach of the Year in girls’ soccer. He is a graduate of Macalester College (BA in History and Geography) and did graduate work at Johns Hopkins University and North Carolina State University.

Megan Cross
State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC): Associate Commissioner
Session IV: Landing the Job

17365Megan Cross is the Associate Commissioner of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) where she serves as the director of conference communications, administers conference championships and conference awards programs, manages the NCAA conference grant program and assists with the conference fiscal management. Cross has prior experience with Divisions I, II and III collegiate athletics as well as professional and international athletics. She also has her New York State Physical Education Teaching Certificate and was a teacher and coach at the high school level for three years. Megan earned her master of science in sport management from East Stroudsburg University (ESU). While completing her degree, Cross was the sports information graduate assistant. Megan went on to work for the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Ma. as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations. Prior to getting her graduate degree, Megan was the website assistant for the Buffalo Bills. A graduate of SUNY Cortland, Cross received a bachelor of arts in communication studies and a minor in sport management and computer applications. She also earned her bachelor of science in education from SUNY Cortland. Megan played four years of softball for the Red Dragons and was a member of the SUNYAC championship team that competed in the Division III World Series her senior year.

Lonnie Folks
Stockton University: Director of Athletics & Recreation
Moderator of Pathways Panel

17366Lonnie Folks possesses over twenty-five years of experience as an athletics administrator. He has been at Stockton University since 1999 when he was hired as the Director of Athletic Operations. Folks was named Director of Athletics & Recreation in December 2008 after holding the position in an interim capacity for five months. Prior to his hiring at Stockton, Folks worked for 17 years in the athletic department at his alma mater, Maryville University in St. Louis. During that time, Folks was involved in all aspects of the athletic department. He served such roles as conference coordinator, director of athletics facilities, sports information director and assistant director of athletics. Folks coached women’s basketball, women’s soccer and softball at Maryville, winning SLIAC Coach of the Year honors twice each in soccer and softball. In addition to his roles at Stockton and Maryville, Folks has been active on a national level in a variety of ways. He is a graduate of the NCAA Leadership Institute for Ethnic Minority Males, and he has served as a facilitator for the national and regional NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Leadership conferences. Folks also has served as regional chair of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championships Committee and as a member of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Committee. Folks earned Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Master of Business Administration degrees from Maryville University. He was inducted into the Maryville University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Crystal Gibson
St. Mary's College of Maryland: Senior Woman Administrator / Women's Basketball Coach
Session VI: What to Expect at the Beginning of Your Career

17369The 2016-17 marks Crystal Gibson's fifth year as the athletic department's senior woman administrator. Gibson also serves at the helm of the Seahawk women's basketball program. The Owings Mills, Md. native serves as a resource to all student-athletes and coaches, including being a spokeswoman for the needs and interest of female athletes. She is a co-advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and oversees the Faculty/Staff Mentor Outreach Program. Gibson is currently the chair of the Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball committee and her two-year tenure will end at the end of the 2016-17 season. She also holds professional memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). In addition, Gibson supervises the operations of the Field Hockey, Women's Soccer, Volleyball, and Women's Lacrosse varsity programs and institutes leadership programs for all student -athletes.

Charles S. Harris
Averett University: Executive Vice President
Session I: Landscape of Minorities in Athletics

17368Charles S. Harris began his professional career in college athletics working as an Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of Michigan.  He worked in a number of capacities at Michigan including Assistant Director of Athletics.  In 1979 he was named as Director of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania.  In 1983 he was named Director of Athletics at Arizona State University, a position he held until 1996.   In both the IVY League at Penn and the PAC-12 at Arizona State, he was the first minority to be named as a Director of Athletics. He's been a facilitator at numerous NCAA Leadership conferences and has served on several  NCAA Committees, including the Division I and Division III Management Council, the Division I Men’s Basketball Selection Committee, Division III Football Committee, Championships Cabinet and Membership Committee.  A winner of the NACDA John McClendon Award, he has served as a Conference Commissioner and as a Division III Athletic Director.  He is currently the Executive Vice President of Averett University.

Shantey Hill
St. Joseph's College Long Island: Assistant Vice President & Senior Director of Athletics & Recreation
Session VI: What to Expect at the Beginning of Your Career

17367On November 25, 2013 Shantey Hill was named the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation and Chair of the Department of Physical Education on the Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College. Shortly thereafter, in July of 2015 Ms. Hill was promoted to her current role of Asst. Vice President and Sr. Director of Athletics where she now oversees the Athletic Departments on both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses. Prior to joining SJC, Hill spent more than a decade at LIU Post where she began as Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Sports Medicine and within four short years worked her way up to Senior Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator. Hill was responsible for all internal operations working closely with the Director of Athletics and various campus administrative offices to ensure the University’s Athletic Department abided by NCAA and Conference office rules and regulations. Hill is no stranger to service and volunteer work on the national and local levels as she currently serves as Vice-Chair of the NCAA Management Council, the NCAA Board of Governors Committee for Cultural Diversity and Equity, and the United Way of Long Island’s Board of Directors. Previously, she has lent her time and talent to the Women’s Fund of Long Island as Board Vice-President and Chair of the Grants Review Committee and the NCAA National Basketball Committee as East Region Chair to name a few. A 1999 graduate of LIU Post (B.S. Physical Education), she was a standout member and captain of the Pioneer Women’s Basketball team. In 2001, she obtained a master’s degree in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training from California University of Pennsylvania and earned a second master’s degree in Health Education in 2004 from Columbia University’s Teachers College a member of the Ivy League. She maintains National and NY State certifications as an Athletic Trainer.

David Howell
Cabrini University: Athletic Communications Director
Session VIi: The Many Hats of Athletics

17370David Howell joined the Cabrini University staff as Sports Information Director in September 2011 and was promoted to Athletic Communications Director in 2016.  Howell is responsible for the day-to-day public relations efforts for the Cabrini Athletic Department. He serves as the primary media contact for the Cavaliers, maintains the department's web site – www.cabriniathletics.com – and coordinates all gameday sports information operations. A native of Wilmington, DE, Howell earned his undergraduate degree in marketing from Kettering University. He completed his master's degree in sports administration at Wayne State University and MBA at Rockford.  Prior to coming to Cabrini, Howell also spent time at Rockford College and with the Detroit Pistons.


Danielle Lynch
Penn State Harrisburg: Senior Woman Administrator / Cross Country, Track & Field Coach

Session III: Building a Personal Brand and Philosophy
17371Danielle Lynch is the first men's and women's track & field head coach in Penn State Harrisburg history. Lynch also serves as our Senior Woman Administrator, Student Athlete Welfare Coordinator and Student Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor. Lynch takes over at Penn State Harrisburg following an eight-year stint as an assistant at Bucknell where she coached the sprinters, middle distance runners and hurdlers under Bison head coach Kevin Donner. Lynch coached over 30 Patriot League champions and 20 of her runners hold school records at Bucknell.  Prior to her time at Bucknell, Lynch spent two years as an assistant at Army.  She coached the sprinters and hurdlers and helped the Black Knights men’s team win two Patriot League outdoor championships, as well as an IC4A outdoor title. A hurdling standout and graduate of Rutgers, Lynch competed in the sprints, hurdles and multi events and was named co-captain and MVP of the Scarlet Knights women’s team her senior year. Lynch is a charter member of the Alliance for Women’s Coaches, an NCAA Women’s Coaching Academy Graduate and the Graduate Chapter President and Undergraduate Advisor of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, Susquehanna University and Penn State Harrisburg. After earning her Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Anthropology from Rutgers in 2003, Lynch earned her Master of Science in Education from Bucknell in 2010 and is currently pursuing her doctorate in Adult Education.

Adrienne Mullikin
Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC): Commissioner

17372Adrienne Mullikin joined the CSAC staff as its assistant commissioner in July 2013 and was promoted to Commissioner in March 2016. Since 1997, Mullikin has worked in the athletic communications field in various roles for six different schools at both the Division I and III level. Mullikin began her career in intercollegiate athletics as a sports information intern at Towson University in 1997. After a two-year stint at Towson, she accepted her first full-time position as the assistant sports information director at West Virginia University in May 1999. A year later, she joined the staff at St. John's University in a similar capacity. Mullikin became the sports information director at Manhattan College in September 2001 and after a two-year tenure with the Jaspers, she then went on to serve as the assistant director of athletic communications at the U.S. Military Academy for two years. From 2006-13, Mullikin served as the assistant director of athletics for communications and sports information director at Hood College. Mullikin graduated with honors from Hollins College in 1997 with a bachelor of arts degree in communication arts.

Alexiss Robinson
Immaculata University: Coordinator of Diversity and Achievement in Athletics

17374Alexiss Robinson starts her second year as the Coordinator of Diversity and Achievement in Athletics at Immaculata University.  She comes from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia where she served as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services and the Senior Women's Administrator since August of 2012. Prior to Hampton, Robinson was the Director of Student-Athlete Support Services at Howard University in Washington D.C. for two and a half years.  She also served as the Assistant Director of Compliance & Student Services at Temple University Coordinator. Robinson graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Sports Management from Hampton University, and then went on to earn her Masters of Science in Kinesiology from Indiana University. She is a member of Women Leaders in College Sports. She recently served as a Facilitator at the 2016 NCAA Leadership forum.

Justin Scott
Arcadia University: Assistant Athletic Director / Men's Basketball Coach
Session VII: The Many Hats of Athletics

17375Justin Scott recently completed his fifth season as head coach of the Arcadia University men’s basketball team in, after serving as the top assistant coach at Arcadia for two seasons. Scott also serves as an Assistant Director of Athletics where he has direct oversight of NCAA compliance and the Baseball and Men's & Women's Cross Country programs. In his five seasons on the sidelines, Scott has guided the Knight to three MAC Commonwealth Playoff appearances, highlighted by appearing in the 2015-1016 Commonwealth Championship Game for the first time in school history. In the summer of 2014, Scott was named the head coach of the St. Vincent & The Grenadines Senior Men's Basketball Team, and led that squad at the 2015 FIBA Caribbean Basketball Championship in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Scott currently is a member of the NCAA Rules Committee and has also been a member of the NCAA Men's Basketball Regional Advisory Committee. Scott graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management in 2007. Scott earned a master’s degree in Management and Leadership with a concentration in Sport Management from East Stroudsburg in 2008. Scott joined Arcadia after three successful seasons at his alma mater East Stroudsburg University assisting Head Coach Jeff Wilson and the Warriors from 2007-10. While at East Stroudsburg, Scott also served as the Coordinator for Special Projects, Diversity and Social Justice Education in the Athletic Department. In this role, Scott aided the ESU coaching staff in recruiting and retaining diverse student-athletes and coaches, implementing social justice education programs and assisting in athletic operations.

Adam Skaggs
NCAA: 
Assistant Director of Division III Governance Communications
Session II: NCAA 101

17376Skaggs oversees and coordinates the Division III messaging and strategic communications, including: The Division III Identity Initiative; The Division III website; Division III social media accounts; The Division’s partnership with Special Olympics. Skaggs also works closely with CoSIDA and the division’s leadership to develop other communications and educational resources.





Terry Small
New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC): Commissioner

17377On October 1, 2002, the New Jersey Athletic Conference named Terry Small to the position of Commissioner. In his position, he oversees the administration, daily operations, and publicity efforts of the NCAA Division III conference which has captured 63 national championships since its inception in 1957. Prior to accepting his current position, Small served as Assistant Athletic Director at Stevens Institute of Technology. A 1992 graduate of Elon University with a B.A. in Communications, Small spent eight years as an athletic administrator in the City University of New York. After originally being hired as the Sports Information Director at the College of Staten Island, Small was promoted to the positions of Assistant to the Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director and Acting Director of Athletics. Following seven years of service at CSI, Small accepted the position of Associate Athletic Director at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan. Prior to his arrival in CUNY, Small spent two years with the public relations department of the Philadelphia Eagles. He continues to serve as a media relations consultant and radio statistician for the Philadelphia Eagles and has assisted the New York Yankees, the New York Jets, the United States Military Academy and the NCAA with various media events. From a period of 2012 to 2016, Small served as a member of the NCAA Division III Management Council, the NCAA Division III Championships Committee, the NCAA Division III Nominating Committee, and the NCAA Division III Playing & Practice Season Subcommittee. He currently holds membership in both the NCAA Division III Commissioners Association and the Philadelphia Sportswriters Association. Small also currently serves as Treasurer and Past President of the Collegiate Athletic Administrators of New Jersey. He previously served stints on both the NCAA Division III Baseball and Men's Basketball Committees.

Gary Stewart
Stevenson University: Assistant Athletics Director / Men's Basketball Coach
Session IV: Landing the Job

17378Gary Stewart recently wrapped up his sixth season as head men’s basketball coach at Stevenson.  He has led the Mustangs to back-to-back ECAC South titles in 2014 and 2015.  A veteran coach with head coaching experience in all three NCAA divisions, Stewart was head coach at UC Davis most recently, guiding its transition to Division I.  He has also been a head coach at Cal State East Bay and La Verne, his alma mater.  Stewart has been on the staffs of Pac 12 members Washington State and UCLA and is currently a member of the NABC Board of Directors.



Marie Stroman
Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC): Associate Executive Director

17379Marie (Godwin) Stroman was named Coordinator of MAC 100 in July 2011 and became Assistant Executive Director in July 2013. Her title was elevated to Associate Executive Director in October 2015. She is responsible for implementing special events including overseeing all aspects of the MAC cross country, individual tennis, swimming, golf, track & field, and wrestling championships. She also coordinates the START and MAC SAAC programs, and conference technology. Marie started a four-year term on the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Committee in 2014. Before assuming this position, Marie was the Head Volleyball Coach and Program Coordinator at Classic Athletics in Chanhassen, Minnesota. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Educational Studies from Macalester College in 2010 and a Master of Education in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership from the University of Washington in June 2014. As a former volleyball student-athlete, Marie served as chair of the Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while also serving on the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. She was a two-year captain and four-year starter for the Fighting Scots and voted team MVP her senior season.

Sarah Twiggs
Landmark Conference: Assistant Commissioner

17380Prior to joining the Landmark, Sarah worked for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), which is a Division II conference based in Michigan and Ohio.  While in the league office, Twiggs was responsible for media inquiries, social media platforms, assisted with the conference website, coordinated the league’s awards program, and took part in the development of new sponsorship proposals. Prior to her time with the GLIAC, Sarah served a two year Graduate Assistantship in the Sports Information office at Ohio Dominican University, and received her Master of Science in Business Administration. Sarah has also spent time as an intern in sports information at Thiel College (Pa.) and one season each with the Visalia (Cali.) Rawhide (Class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Class AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers). Twiggs earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sports Business from Mount Union College in 2009.  While at Mount Union, Sarah worked in the Sports Information Department and finished her final semester working in media relations for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
