Franklin & Marshall College

1971-1999

Dr. William “Doc” Marshall has been pivotal in the development of intercollegiate athletics at Franklin & Marshall College as the Director of Athletics from 1971 to 1999 – in an era where women’s rights were beginning to flourish, he ensured that it was a priority to introduce women’s athletics (11 sports teams) just ten years after the institution became co-educational. In the 1999-2000 academic year Marshall served as a special assistant to the Vice President of the college. As a coach, Marshall posted a 233-129-1 record in 18 seasons with the men’s squash program. Outside his own institution, Bill Marshall played an influential role in the developing the Centennial Conference. He also served as President of the ECAC during the 1998-1999 academic year and served on the Board, Executive Committee and Eligibility Committee. Marshall served the NCAA in the following capacities: Council (four years), Division III Steering Committee (four years), and Interpretations and Eligibility Committees (four years). He served as the President of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association for multiple years and one year as the President of the ECAC Ice Hockey League. Among his many accomplishments Marshall is a member of the NCDA, Intercollegiate Squash Association and Franklin & Marshall Sports Halls of Fame.
