A team captain and MVP, Cottrell received numerous accolades for his achievements on the football field including: three-time All-MAC Northern Division First Team, ECAC First Team All-Star, Maxwell Football Club, and two-time All-American. In track & field, Cottrell holds the conference record for the shot put and was a three-time MAC Champion in the event. After his collegiate career, the Atlanta Falcons drafted him in the NFL. Cottrell later moved into coaching at Rutgers University and then in the NFL with various teams. Currently he serves as an NFL-NFLPA on-field appeals officer. Buffalo Bills great Bruce Smith said of Cottrell, “Ted treats you like a person first and a player second.”
