Hal Lear was the leading scorer on the 1955-56 Temple team that compiled a 27-4 record and finished third in the NCAA Tournament. He was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament that year after his 48-point outburst against Southern Methodist gave the Owls a third place finish. Winner of All-American honors, Lear had a career total of 1,472 points and still holds the single season Temple record with 745 points in the 1955-56 season when he averaged 24 pgg. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA and later starred in the Eastern Basketball League. He was inducted into the Temple Hall of Fame in 1974 and the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame the same year.
