COCOA BEACH (FL) – Sophomores Becky Furman and Keri Hardiman combined for a no-hitter in the second game as Delaware Valley College opened its season with a pair of victories on its Spring Break trip to Florida. The Aggies took a 6-3 victory over Sweet Briar College (VA) and followed with a 4-2 triumph over Division II University of Minnesota-Crookston.
Furman started the nightcap and went five innings. She allowed two runs (one earned) and four walks while striking out five batters. Hardiman came in and picked up the win in relief as she pitched two innings without allowing a hit and fanned two. The only Golden Eagles (0-3) to reach base were on the four walks by Furman as well as two Delaware Valley errors.
Despite the no-hitter being thrown, the Aggies found themselves down 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth innings. With two runners on, three-time all-Freedom Conference honoree Bethany Pavlik came to the plate and she ripped a double to score both runners and tie the game. Sophomore third baseman Sarah Lazar followed with a two-run homer, the first round-tripper of her collegiate career, for a 4-2 lead. Hardiman retired Minnesota-Crookston in order in the seventh to complete the no-hitter.
The season opener saw sophomore Maggie Kichler pick up the win as she went five innings and allowed one unearned run and three hits. She walked just two batters and struck out six. Offensively, Pavlik was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while freshman first baseman Dani Walton was also 2-for-3 and drove home a pair of runs. Senior outfielder Nancy Kauffman had a two-run double while Hardiman and senior Lauren Fenstermacher were each 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Delaware Valley returns to action with three games on Monday.
