Myrtle Beach, SC: 3/17/10 - Down one run in the eighth, junior Virginia Buechel drilled a walk-off home run that scored senior Kristen Burns and lifted the Knights to their second win of the season, topping Norwich University 4-3 Tuesday afternoon in Myrtle Beach, SC. Junior Kellie Reese (2-3 overall) earned the win, her second of the season, pitching the complete game, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 10. Buechel (4-4, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI) was perfect at the dish, hitting for the cycle and picked up her 95th career hit on the game winning home run. The win gives Arcadia University (2-4 overall) head coach Linda Detra the 350th victory of her 18 year coaching career.
Norwich plated two runs to open the scoring in the top of the third but Buechel responded with an RBI single that brought Amy Johnson (1-2, 1 run scored) home to cut Norwich's lead in half. Neither team would score in the fourth and fifth. Buechel ripped a triple to right center to lead off the sixth inning and tied the game on a one-out RBI single to left off the bat of Erin Wojcieszyn (1-3, 1 RBI). The Knights would leave two men on base to end the inning and dealt Norwich a one-two-three inning to force extra innings.
A one-out RBI single plated a Norwich run in the eighth but they left two men on to close the inning with a one-run lead, 5-4. Arcadia would have their fair-ups and needed just one batter to win the game. Burns took second on the extra-inning rule with Buechel leading off at the dish and drilled a walk-off home run to win the game.
On Wednesday morning (3/17/10) in Mrytle Beach, SC the Knights routed Norwich 7-1. Kristen Burns (3-4, 1 HR, 3 runs scored, 4 RBI) led Arcadia at the dish, and opened the game's scoring on an RBI single to center that scored Lindsey Henchinski (2-4, 1 run scored). The Knights plated a run in the second and third innings to go up 3-0 on an RBI single to center from Kaitlyn Chasse (2-3, 1 run scored, RBI) and a third inning lead off home run from Burns, her first of the season. On the mound this morning was sophomore Kelsey Roberts (1-1 overall) and she went the distance giving up 1 run on three hits with 5 walks while striking out 4. Norwich scored their lone run on an RBI producing double in the sixth, with Arcadia leading 3-1. It was the only extra-base hit allowed by Roberts, who picks up her first win of the 2010 campaign. The Knights close out their four-game series with Norwich University with tomorrow's double-header which begins at 9 AM in Mrytle Beach, SC.
