HAVERFORD, Pa.  Traci Tempone broke a personal record and ran the ninth fastest 5000m time in the country Friday night in the opening session of Haverford's Seamus McElligott Meet.

Running about 20 miles from her hometown of Collegeville, Tempone outpaced all 15 competitors with her new PR of 17:42.48. Tempone's time was over four seconds faster than the 17:46.61 she turned at the Haverford Invitational in Dec. 2010. The time kept her third on E-town's all-time top 10 list in the event.

Tempone's top 10 NCAA Division III time currently qualifies her for the Indoor National Championships, to be held in Grinnell, Iowa in March. Differing from past years, there are no longer automatic or provisional qualifiying times for NCAAs. The top 13 declared athletes will go from each event.

Three other Blue Jay women were within five seconds of each other in the 5000m Friday night, led by Eileen Cody's 18:33.86. Megan Tursi followed Cody at 18:35.54 and Megan Patton rounded out the 5-6-7 finish for E-town with a time of 18:38.77. While Tempone and Cody maintained their spots on the top 10 list, Tursi joined it with the seventh best time in school history and Patton moved up one position from 10th to ninth.

E-town wraps up action at Haverford tomorrow afternoon.
