FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College shot 59 percent from 3-point range, as six players reached double figures in an 85-79 win over Albright in the Commonwealth Conference First Round.
With the win, the Blazers will travel to Stevenson on Wednesday, February 26 at 7 p.m. It also gave Hood 17 victories on the season, the second-most in school history.
Justin Bowens (Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) led the Blazers with 19 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. His eight rebounds and four assists were team-highs, as well.
Cameron Cook (Baltimore, Md. / Calvert Hall) finished with 15 points, converting all three of his 3-point attempts during a 4-of-8 shooting night. The senior also went 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
Chris Cook (Mechanicsburg, Va. / Lee-Davis) added 13 points and
Reggie Daniels (Abingdon, Md. / Patterson Mill) and
Matt Galloway (Sterling, Va. / Potomac Falls) scored 10 apiece as all five starters reached double digits. Daniels blocked a team-high four shots.
Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) continued his strong play off the bench with 11 points, the third time in four games he scored at least 10. He matched Cameron Cook's 3-of-3 night from behind the arc and Galloway gave the Blazers a trio of players with that many threes, finishing 3-of-6.
As a team, Hood went 10-of-17 from behind the arc.
Pedro Perez scored a game-high 31 points for Albright, hitting 11-of-20 field goals. Kyle Jordan had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. He also had four assists and blocked five shots.
Hood trailed early after a Sam Marrella bucket made the score 8-4 less than three minutes after the opening tip. The Blazers answered with the first of Galloway's 3-pointers, which ignited a 13-0 run. Bowens had five points in the run as Hood claimed a 17-8 lead on a three by Cook with 14:17 to go in the half.
The Lions clawed back into the game and trailed by just one after a pair of free throws by Sameen Swint made the score 37-36 with a 1:11 left in the first half. On the final possession of the half, Hill let one fly from the left wing to give the Blazers a four-point advantage at the break.
Back-to-back threes by Cook to open the second half started an 11-4 run that resulted in a 51-40 lead on a Bowens layup with 17:40 to play. The Blazers took their biggest lead of the night when Hill connected from 3-point range for a 61-49 advantage with 11:44 remaining.
Albright quickly cut into the lead and trailed by five after a jumper by Perez with 7:49 to go to make it 63-58. With just under two minutes to play, the Lions were able to pull within a single possession, 71-68, on a free throw by Evan Ward. Ward missed the second foul shot, however, and Chris Cook was able to get in close for two to stretch the lead back to five, with 1:40 to play.
Perez tried to answer, but Daniels blocked the shot, and Bowens scored and drew the foul at the other end to put Hood ahead by eight, 76-68 with 1:14 on the clock.
Hood went 21-of-25 from the free throw line (84 percent), while Albright converted just 20 of 29 attempts (69 percent).
Despite Jordan's game-high 12 boards, the Blazers outrebounded the Lions 37-28.
