MAC Weekly Awards Announcement (April 11, 2022)

ANNVILLE, Pa. (Conference News) The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) has announced its conference weekly award recipients for the week ending April 4, 2022. A total of 17 student-athletes were recognized for performances from April 4 - 10, 2022.

During the spring season golf and tennis weekly awards will be announced on Tuesdays following any competition that occurs during the spring segment of their seasons.


MEN’S VOLLEYBALL (#MACvb)

MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Koby Sherman (Stevens / Fy., OH / Sunnyvale, Calif.) was named the MAC Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP). Sherman finished the match with 21 points on 17 kills (.414) and three aces with five digs. In their win over Arcadia in the semifinal match, he added 27 points on 26 kills (.465) and one ace with four digs to finish the tournament at 48 points with 43 kills (.440), four aces and nine digs in just six sets. 

BASEBALL  (#MACBaseball)

MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week 
Justin Costanzo (Widener / Jr., OF, DH / East Greenwich, N.J.) earns his second conference weekly award of the season. Costanzo had a great offensive week for the Pride going 8-for-13 with seven runs scored, four home runs and 11 RBIs. The junior’s best game of the week came against Lebanon Valley where he went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored. For the week, he batted .615, slugged 1.538, and had a .737 on-base percentage. 

MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week 
Matt Reich (Stevenson / Sr., P / Wantagh, N.Y.) earns his second consecutive conference weekly award of the season. The senior starter pitched eight scoreless innings against Albright. Reich carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning where he allowed only one hit on 12 strikeouts for the day. 

MAC Freedom Player of the Week 
Joe Comins (Misericordia / Jr., OF / Warners, N.Y.) went 7-for-12 in four games with a double, six runs scored and seven RBIs. Comins had a productive week offensively for the Cougars reaching base safely and manufacturing RBIs in every game he played in. Comins’ played his best game against Susquehanna going 3-for-5 drawing a walk, three RBIs and scoring three runs.

MAC Freedom Pitcher of the week 
Shane Beyer (King’s / Sr., P / Phillipsburg, N.J.) threw a complete-game shutout in his only appearance of the week. Beyer dominated the Aggies facing 23 batters and allowing only two hits and one walk while striking out seven.

SOFTBALL (#MACsb)

MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week 
Malia Calciano (Widener / Sr., 1B / Wallingford, Pa.) went 4-for-9 on the week in a pair of double headers against conference opponents, Hood and Alvernia. Three of Calciano’s four hits were home runs. Her solo homer against Alvernia came in the sixth inning to lift the Pride to a 4-3 win. 

MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week
Marissa Heuer (Stevenson / Sr., P / Severna Park, Md.) went 2-0 on three appearances including tossing her second-career no-hitter against Messiah. Heuer struck out five Messiah batters and walked just two to secure the no-hitter shutout. On the week, the senior pitcher tallied nine strikeouts while holding her opponent’s batting average to just .173. 

MAC Freedom Player of the Week 
Madi Costigan (Arcadia / So., OF / Marriottsville, Md.) went 7-for-10 during Arcadia’s perfect 4-0 week against MAC Freedom opponents Wilkes and Lycoming. Costigan started and played in three games, having multiple hits and RBIs in each. Her top performance came in the first game of their double header against Lycoming where she went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a stolen base and four RBIs.

MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Week 
Juliana Presto (Arcadia / So., P / Easton, Pa.) earns her third conference weekly award of the season. Presto picked up three wins with a pair over Wilkes and one over Lycoming. She sophomore threw a total of 14 innings allowing only two earned runs while striking out 22 batters. 

MEN’S LACROSSE (#MAClax)

MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Josh Brannan (Stevenson / Sr., M / Edgewater, Md.) registered 15 points with eight goals and seven assists in a 2-0 conference week for No. 17 Stevenson. Brannan tied Mustang single-game record with 12 points (five goals, seven assists) against Hood. He added a hat trick on just four shots in their win over Eastern. 

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week 
Ryan Kennedy (York / Gr., D / Arnold, Md.) earns his second conference weekly award of the season. Kennedy led a defense that allowed just 4.76 goals per game in a pair of conference victories and a win over No. 14 Cabrini. He led the team on the week with 15 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. 

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week 
Zach Bowen (DeSales / Sr., A / Middletown, De.) led the bulldogs to a perfect 2-0 record last week with conference wins over FDU-Florham and WIlkes. Bowen totaled 16 points with seven goals and nine assists. He had three goals with seven assists against FDU and added four goals with two assists against Wilkes to become DeSales’ all-time leading scorer. 

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Ben Franco (Lycoming / Fy. G / Macungie, Pa.) posted 19 saves while allowing just nine goals in 2-0 week for the Warriors. Franco notched six saves in the 16-7 win over King’s and added 13 in the 12-7 win over FDU. The first year goalie is now second in the MAC Freedom with a .581 save percentage. 

WOMEN’S LACROSSE (#MAClax)

MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Rachel Delate (Messiah / Jr., A / Glen Mills, Pa.) collected 16 points in two games to lead Messiah to a pair of MAC Commonwealth victories over Alvernia and Widener. Delate scored six goals and had three assists in the 18-6 victory over Alvernia, then posted four goals and three assists in a 14-10 victory over WIdener. The junior attack recorded 10 goals, six assists, and six draw controls for the week. 

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
McKenna Blick (Stevenson / Gr., A / Queenstown, Md.) recorded six ground balls with four turnovers and three caused turnovers in two huge wins for the Mustangs. In Stevenson’s 25-7 win over Hood, Blick picked up two ground balls, with two turnovers and one caused turnovers. Later in the week, the graduate student picked up four ground balls, two turnovers and two caused turnovers in the 20-1 win over Eastern. 

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week 
Katie Walsh (FDU-Florham / So., M / Marlton, N.J.) earns her second consecutive conference weekly award of the season. Walsh registered nine goals and five assists for 14 points and added sex draw controls in a 2-0 week for the Devils. In their 21-2 win over DeSales, she had seven points with four goals and three assists. The sophomore midfielder scored seven points with five goals and two assists. 

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Emily Griffith (Arcadia / So., G / Easton, Md.) earns her third conference weekly award of the season. Griffith was big in goal to lead Arcadia to a 2-0 week. Overall, she made 12 saves between their 16-7 win over Wilkes and their 22-5 win over Delaware Valley. 

MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD (#MACtf)

MAC Track Athlete of the Week 
Carl Tyce (DeSales / Jr. / Highland Falls, N.Y.) placed first in the 1,500m over the weekend at the Messiah University Invitational. Tyce’s time of 3:58.41 set a new school record and is currently the fastest 1500m time in the MAC this outdoor season. 

MAC Field Athlete of the Week
Mattew Murray (DeSales / Sr. / Coatesville, Pa.) posted a first place finish in the shot put at the Messiah University Invitational this weekend. His mark of 15.57m was enough to break a DeSales outdoor record and is currently the best toss in the MAC this season. Murray also competed in the hammer throw, placing fourth with a mark of 43.58m. 


WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD (#MACtf)

MAC Track Athlete of the Week 
Esther Seeland (Messiah / Sr. / State College, Pa.) earns her third consecutive conference weekly award of the season. Seeland competed in the 400m at the Messiah University Invitational on Saturday. She took first in a field of 40 runners with a time of 57.23 seconds, outrunning the second place finisher by over three seconds. Seeland’s mark is good for 10th overall in Division III so far this season. 

MAC Field Athlete of the Week 
Sarah Wagner (Misericordia / Fy. / Ashland, Pa.) earns her second conference weekly award of the season. Wagner competed and won the long jump at the Messiah University Invitational on Saturday with a mark of 5.59m, currently top jump in the MAC this season. She also anchored the 4x100 relay taking first with her teammates with a time of 49.64 seconds.
