MAC Weekly Awards Announcement (February 26, 2024)

15 student-athletes were recognized for performances from Feb. 19 to Feb. 25.

NEWTOWN, Pa. (Conference News) – The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) has announced its conference weekly award recipients for the week ending February 25, 2024. A total of 15 student-athletes were recognized for performances from Feb. 19, 2024 to Feb. 25, 2024.

WRESTLING (#MACwrestle)
Wrestler of the Week

Carmen Cortese (Stevens / Fy. / West Chester, Pa.) won the 149-pound championship at the Mideast Futures Tournament. The first-year wrestler posted five wins, two coming with bonus points. Cortese totaled three decisions, a tech fall and a major en route to the weight class title. In the championship, Cortese posted a 12-10 decision over TCNJ's Mayson Hamms and reached double-digit points in four of his five matches.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL (#MACvb)
MAC Offensive Player of the Week

Anthony DePalma (Misericordia / Sr., OH / Wayne, N.J.) hit .554 with 36 kills and eight aces in a 2-1 week. He had 10 kills and four aces in a 3-0 win at Emmanuel and 22 kills and two aces in a loss at MIT. DePalma had four kills and two aces in just one set in a 3-0 over Emerson.

MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Gavin Gilhool (King’s / Jr., MB / Elizabethtown, Pa.) posted a total of 15 blocks and five digs in the Monarchs' 2-1 week. He averaged five blocks a game and 1.5 blocks a set. Gilhool gained six blocks against and three digs in the loss against Eastern. The junior middle blocker had five blocks and a dig in the win over Yeshiva. He also had four blocks and a dig to help King's sweep Saint Elizabeth University.

MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week

Chad Teresky (Messiah / Jr., A / Derry, N.H.) led the Falcons offense in the dominant 21-8 win over Marymount University on Saturday. Teresky finished the game with 11 points on five goals and six assists and also added three ground balls. Teresky played a big role in the Falcons offense's explosive start with two goals and four assists in the first half.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Dane Sabarese (Alvernia / Jr., GK / Delanco, N.J.) picked up the win in net for Alvernia in a season-opening 12-5 win at Juniata on Saturday. Sabarese made 13 saves and allowed five goals in Alvernia's win over the Eagles. Sabarese also had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Golden Wolves.

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Connor Bevan (Misericordia / So., A / Bethlehem, Pa.) had five goals and three assists in a win at Sage.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Jim Murphy (Delaware Valley / Sr., GK / Rutland, Mass.) earned his first win of his senior season this Saturday in a 12-8 win over Rosemont College. Murphy made 14 saves with a .636 save percentage in the lone game for the Aggies.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE (#MAClax)
MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week

Haleigh Lackner (Alvernia / Sr., M / Harrisburg, Pa.) opened Alvernia's 2024 season with 11 points in a 1-1 week for the Golden Wolves. In a 17-9 win over Immaculata in Alvernia's season-opener, Lackner scored five goals and had four assists. She also finished the game with four ground balls, five caused turnovers, and five draw controls. In a setback to Marymount on Friday, Lackner had two goals on four shots. She also had three ground balls and a caused turnover.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Sophia Murray (Stevenson / Gr., D / Pottstown, Pa.) had one caused turnovers, four ground balls and three caused turnovers in Saturday’s loss to Washington College in OT. Murray helped keep Stevenson in the game as the Mustangs rallied from two three goal deficits.

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Michelle Torzilli (Misericordia / Sr., A / East Northport, N.Y.) had eight goals and two assists and added 11 draw controls in a 1-1 week. Had six goals and two assists in a win over Marywood. She had two goals and eight draw controls in a loss to Susquehanna.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Chloe Burke (King’s / Jr., M / Dallas, Pa.) won 20 draw controls, seven ground balls, and one caused turnover in the Monarchs 1-1 week. She averaged 10 draw control wins a game. Burke won 13 draw controls, five ground balls, and one caused turnover to help lead King's to their first win of the season over Gwynedd Mercy. The midfielder earned seven draw control wins and two ground balls in the loss to Bryn Athyn.

BASEBALL (#MACbaseball)
MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week

Dutch DeProspero (Hood / Jr., P / Leesburg, Va.) had three hits, zero runs, one BB, and five strikeouts in a 11-0 win over Pittsburgh-Greensburg. He is 2-0 on the season thus far.

MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week
Evan Wagaman (Messiah / Jr., OF / Chambersburg, Pa.) led the Falcons offense in the two wins over Covenant College on Saturday. Wagaman finished the day with five hits, seven RBIs, and four runs in 11 at-bats. Wagaman opened the day with a double, home run, five runs batted in, and two runs in the Falcons 19-7 win. Wagaman continued to hit in game two with three hits, including a home run, two runs batted in and two runs in the 12-8 win. He played a crucial role
in the Falcons jumping to an early lead in game two with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Week
Erik Sibbach (Stevens / So., P / Boxford, Mass.) earned his second victory of the year with a five-inning gem in a 3-1 victory at William Paterson. The second-year right-hander scattered just two hits and struck out a career-high 10 across five scoreless innings. He leads the MAC Freedom in both innings pitched and strikeouts and his 10 punchouts are the most by a MAC Freedom pitcher to date.

MAC Freedom Player of the Week
Anthony Bruno (Arcadia / Jr., OF / Horsham, Pa.) led the Knights offensively with four multi-hit games to begin the year. In total, he went 9-for-17 (.529), tallying six RBI, a home run, a double and seven runs scored. He began the week going 2-for-4 with three runs scored in a big Arcadia win over Ursinus in the season opener. He then once again went 2-for-4 as he helped Arcadia upset No. 3 Baldwin Wallace, 5-4. He hit a home run, and went 2-for-5 in the rematch against third-ranked Baldwin Wallace, and then concluded his week with an exclamation point, helping Arcadia defeat the top ranked team in the nation, Johns Hopkins, 15-6. Bruno went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and two runs scored in the Knights win over the Blue Jays.
