Grad student earns second regionla athlete of the year honor

NEW ORLEANS, La. (May 23, 2024)
– Graduate student Laura Mathews of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's outdoor track and field team was named Metro Region Track Athlete of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

The recognition is the second career Regional Athlete of the Year nod for the Denville, New Jersey native during the outdoor season after earning similar recognition in 2022.

Mathews ranked in the top-three in the region in five different individual events and totaled 31.25 individual points in the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Outdoor Championships. Her marks of 13.61 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 24.34 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 4,823 points in the heptathlon each led the Metro Region, while also ranking among the top-14 marks Division III. Mathews also finished second in the region in the 100-meter dash (11.94 seconds) and third in the long jump (5.60 meters). For her efforts at the MAC's outdoor championship, Mathews repeated as Track Athlete of the Year.
