Seven student-athletes receive prestigious conference academic award

NEWTOWN, Pa. (Academic News) – The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Executive Director Megan Morrison announced the 2024 Fall MAC Senior Scholar-Athletes on Tuesday. A senior student-athlete from each of the seven fall sports (men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball) was recognized for their strong academic and athletic prowess.

ERIC SHELTON
Men's Cross Country - Lebanon Valley College

Eric Shelton (Dover, Pa.) helped lead the Flying Dutchmen to its first-ever MAC Men's Cross Country Championship title in 2024. He finished in eighth place overall that gave him All-MAC First Team honors. Shelton finished 52nd (2024) and 80th (2023) at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. In his senior season, he ran a career-best time of 25:50.0 at the Mike Woods Invitational. He is also a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field team at Lebanon Valley.

Shelton, an exercise science major, is anticpiated to graduate in 2025. He holds a 3.613 grade-point average (undergraduate degree) and a 3.715 grade-point average (graduate degree). Shelton is a six-time member of the Dean's List and a four-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll. 

GABRIELLA NYE
Women's Cross Country - Widener University

Gabriella Nye (Shippensburg, Pa.) finishes her campaign as a three-time MAC Cross Country All-Conference First Team and Runner of the Year (2022, 2023, 2024). Her first year at Widener, Nye was named to the All-Conference First Team and collected Rookie of the Year. She was named to the USTFCCCA Metro All-Region (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) and named the 2022 USTFCCCA Metro All-Region Runner of the Year. She was apart of the first NCAA Cross Country Championship team to appear in an NCAA Championship at Widener. Nye qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2024. 

A Biology/Pre-Physical Therapy and Spanish major, Nye holds a 4.00 grade-point average. She will complete her graduate degree in May of 2026. Nye is a three-time PhillySIDA XC Performer of the Year, a four-time member of the MAC Academic Honor Roll, MAC Academic All-MAC (2023) and was named to the Dean's List and President's List all semesters. 

Nye serves at the Chester County Community Clinic to medically and under-insured individuals and serves as a Widener tutor. She is a member of Widener SAAC and the Widener Athletic Leadership Initiative (WALI) and a member of Widener Newman, a Catholic Club on campus that hosts bible study events, social events, and takes part in community service. Nye also volunteered to provde free dental work for those in need while a member of the Mission of Mercy in Pennsylvania. 

MORGANNE DEE
Field Hockey - Arcadia University

Morganne Dee (Buffalo, N.Y) is a two-time First-Team All-MAC Freedom selection and a two-time Second-Team All-MAC Freedom selection. Most recently, Dee was named the 2024 MAC Freedom Co-Offensive Player of the Year after recording 23 goals and six assists for 52 points her senior campaign. She was also named to the 2024 NFHCA Division III Watch List and named NFHCA First-Team All-Region IV. She is a tri-sport athlete, also participating on the women's ice hockey and women's lacrosse team.

Dee is a Business Administration major with a 3.92 grade-point average and is expected to graduate in May 2025. She is a three-time NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad selection and a three-time NFHCA Division III Scholar of Distinction. Dee was named PhillySIDA Academic All-Area Performer of the Year and is a two-time PhillySIDA Academic All-Area honoree. 

EVAN KUTZLER
Football - Lebanon Valley College

Evan Kutzler (Souderton, Pa.) was named D3football.com All-Region Third Team (2023) and Second Team (2024). Kutzler finished his season with a spot on the 2024 All-MAC Football First Team as he finished the 2024 season ranked eighth in the nation for interceptions per game. Kutzler has three career touchdown returns on 13 total interceptions as a safety. 

Kutzler is an Exercise Science major and is expected to graduate in May 2025. He holds a 3.928 grade-point average for his undergraduate degree and a 3.953 grade-point average for his graduate degree. He is a four-time selection on the MAC Academic Roll, and was selected to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2023. Kutzler was named to the Dean's list for six semesters and most recently was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-America First Team. 

RYAN COGILL
Men's Soccer - Alvernia University

Ryan Cogill (West Chester, Pa.) had a standout senior season as he was named to the 2024 All-MAC Commonwealth First Team and was named the 2024 MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Year. Cogill collected 18 goals and 2 assists for 38 points, with six game-winners and is the Alvernia Career leader in goals (42) and points (103). He was named to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) First-Team All-Region and named ECAC Player of the Year (2024). Cogill was also a NCAA statistical leader in penalty kick percentage (100%, 7-7). 

Cogill is a Mechanical Engineering major and is anticipated to graduate in May 2025. He holds a 3.65 grade-point average. Cogill was most recently named a First-Team USC Scholar All-American and named to the USC Scholar All-Region team. He is a five-time Dean's List honoree, a four-time MAC Academic Honor Roll honoree and named to the 2024 Academic All-MAC team. 

JULIA BECK
Women's Soccer - Misericordia University

Julia Beck (Langhorne, Pa.) claimed USC First-Team All-American honors and was named the MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Year in 2024. She totaled seven goals and two assists for 16 points.  In the season prior, Beck was named the MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year. Beck is a four-time first-team All-MAC Freedom selection. 

Beck, a Physical Therapy major holds a 3.99 grade-point average and is expected to graduate in 2026. She was tabbed as the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-American of the Year and claimed CSC Academic All-American honors in 2024. She is a seven-time member of the Dean's List and was named the 2023-24 Misericordia Scholar-Athlete of the Year. 

MEG DION
Women's Volleyball - Stevens Institute of Technology

Meg Dion (West Chester, Pa.) was named MAC Freedom Co-Defensive Player of the Year (2023) and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American Honorable Mention (2023). She was named to the AVCA First-Team All-Region in 2023 and also claimed honorable mention in 2022 and 2024. Dion is a three-time First-Team All-MAC Freedom selection. 

Dion is an Electrical Engineering major and holds a 3.959 grade-point average. She is expected to graduate in May 2025. Dion is a two-time CSC Academic All-District awardee and was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2022 and 2023. Dion is no stranger to the MAC Honor Roll as she was awarded the honor five times. She served as team captain and was a volunteer for the Stevens THON Fundraiser.
