The academic honor roll is based off semester grade-point averages (GPA) for the semester of their championship season. Fall sports student-athletes will be recognized on the Fall Academic Honor Roll released in January. Winter and spring sports student-athletes will be recognized in the Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll released in June. The minimum GPA required is a 3.20, and the student-athlete must remain an eligible member of the team through the conclusion of the season. Beginning the 2015-16 season the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Academic Honor Roll will allow first-year student-athletes to be eligible for the award.

Beginning in 2020-21, the MAC will allow its institutions to name all of their NCAA-competing sports to the MAC Academic Honor even if the MAC does not sponsor the sport. To date, the additions are beach volleyball, men's and women's fencing and women's wrestling.

Prior to 2015-16, only student-athletes with a sophomore academic status or higher with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher prior to the semester of announcement were recognized. The honor roll was also announced three times a year after the conclusion of each sport season.
