ANNVILLE, Pa. (Women's Soccer) – Lebanon Valley women's soccer head coach Todd Hoffard has accepted a position as Director of Goalkeeping for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer (MLS).
With the club's season in full swing, he will immediately begin his tenure as the organization's goalkeeper coach, while also serving as a member of the United Soccer League's (USL) goalkeeping staff moving forward. In addition to his responsibilities with the major league club, his duties will also include the development of curriculum and criteria for the league's youth academy, as well as overseeing the progress of the program's goalkeepers.
"I have to thank
Rick Beard '90, M'92,
Stacey Hollinger, Greg Krikorian, and the entire athletic staff at Lebanon Valley College for making me feel so welcome here," said Hoffard. "I have nothing but fantastic things to say about the program, my players, and the College as a whole and I cherish the many fond memories from my time here. I will continue to follow the school's teams, and in particular, the continued progress and ascension of the women's soccer program. I wish everyone at LVC all the best."
Hoffard joins the Real Salt Lake staff under the leadership of head coach Mike Petke. Hoffard will work closely with five-time MLS All-Star Nik Rimando; the team's starting goalkeeper. Rimando is the MLS record-holder for career wins, shutouts, and appearances in goal. Hoffard will join the team in time for a highly-anticipated matchup against iconic international power Manchester United at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on Monday night, July 17, before the team gets back to MLS play against the Portland Timbers on July 19.
A highly sought-after goalkeeping clinician, Hoffard spent two seasons as the goalkeeping coach for the New York Red Bulls of the MLS, including an assignment with the 2011 MLS All-Stars when they played Manchester U at Red Bull Arena. During his tenure in New York, he took part in two MLS playoff seasons, and saw the Red Bulls win the Emirates Cup in London against Paris St. Germain, Boca Juniors, and Arsenal.
During Hoffard's two years as head coach of LVC's women's soccer program, the team won 26 games and twice advanced to the semifinal round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament. Under his tutelage,
Sammy Bost earned a pair of NSCAA All-Region accolades, while seven players combined to earn eight MAC Commonwealth All-Conference honors.
"I cannot thank Todd enough for his contributions to Lebanon Valley College these past two years," said Beard, the College's director of athletics. "Though his time here was brief, it was extremely impactful for the program. We are thrilled for him for this upcoming opportunity and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."
A Lancaster County native, Hoffard also served as the goalkeeping coach for the United States Women's U20 and U14 teams. He possesses playing and coaching experience at virtually every level of the game, from youth development to the professional ranks. He has trained numerous pros, including current Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles, Germany international Frank Rost, and former Colombia and Galatasaray goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon. Closer to home, Hoffard has worked with the Pennsylvania Roar of the MISL and Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL II.
Collegiately, Hoffard garnered a variety of coaching experience on both the men's and women's sides of the game, having served as an assistant with the women's program at Elizabethtown before taking over at LVC. He has also held assistant positions at St. Bonaventure, College of Charleston, Penn, and Temple. His coaching career began concurrently with a professional playing career that saw him play indoor and outdoor soccer with the Harrisburg Heat, Albany Alleycats, Philadelphia Kixx, and Cleveland Crunch before retiring in 2002 after two years with the Charleston Battery of the A-League.
For the past 20 years, Hoffard has been the national director of ONE on ONE Soccer in Lancaster, a residential training camp producing state, regional, and national-level players with programs offered around the country. Hoffard has also been a part of the U.S. Soccer Region I ODP and Pennsylvania ODP staffs, coaching goalkeepers of all ages to various levels ranging from state and regional to ODP and full professionals.
Hoffard played collegiately at NCAA Division I Hartwick College, where he was 26-12-3 with a 1.16 career GAA; he earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Hartwick in 1994. He was selected as the sixth overall pick in the 1994 National Professional Soccer League by the Heat.
Hoffard holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" coaching license. He is a product of Garden Spot High School, where he is a member of the Hall of Fame.
A search for Hoffard's replacement as LVC women's soccer head coach is currently underway.
