ANNVILLE, Pa. (Men’s Soccer) – The Messiah Falcons were selected as the favorite in the 2019 conference preseason poll conducted among the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth (MAC Commonwealth) men’s soccer coaches. The Falcons collected six of the nine first-place votes for a total of 63 points.
Lycoming collected 58 points and three first-place votes to be positioned second. Lebanon Valley received 51 points for third. Stevenson picked up 40 points and Alvernia earned 36 points to round out the top-5 in the preseason poll.
The rest of the poll in respective order includes Arcadia (28 points), Hood (23 points), Widener (18 points) and Albright (8 points).
A season ago, Messiah finished the regular-season conference slate 8-0-0 (24 points) to capture the regular-season title and top-seed in the conference championship. The Falcons went on to win the conference title in penalty kick, 4-1, over second-seeded Lycoming. Messiah has won 14 MAC Commonwealth men’s soccer titles and three MAC titles for a total of 17.
The 2018 MAC Commonwealth Championship seeds were: No. 1 Messiah, No. 2 Lycoming, No. 3 Lebanon Valley, No. 4 Stevenson and No. 5 Alvernia. Stevenson defeated Alvernia in the play-in match. Then Lycoming defeated Lebanon Valley and Messiah defeated Stevenson in the semifinal round.
Messiah earned the conference’s automatic qualifier (AQ) and Lycoming earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Falcons advanced to the sectional final before falling to Rochester by a score of 2-1. Messiah defeated Baruch, Johns Hopkins and SUNY Cortland on their way to the sectional final. Lycoming fell to Penn State Behrend in the opening round.
Hood and Stevenson extended their postseason play in the ECAC Division III Championship. Stevenson opened the tournament with win over Franciscan, but then fell to Wesley in the quarterfinal round. Hood dropped its first-round match to Rutgers-Camden.
The 2019 season is set to begin on Friday, Aug. 30. The 2019 MAC Commonwealth Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 4-9.
Messiah was ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Preseason Poll.
