ANNVILLE, Pa. (Men’s Soccer) – The Stevens Ducks were selected as the favorite in the 2019 conference preseason poll conducted among the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) men’s soccer coaches. The Ducks collected five of the eight first-place votes for a total of 47 points as they enter their first season in the MAC Freedom.
Eastern received 43 points and three first-place votes to be positioned second. King’s collected 37 points to rank third. Misericordia earned 33 points and Wilkes collected 23 points to round out the top-5 in the preseason poll.
The rest of the poll in respective order includes DeSales (19 points), FDU-Florham (15 points) and Delaware Valley (7 points).
A season ago, Eastern finished the regular-season conference slate 7-0-0 (21 points) to capture the regular-season crown and top-seed in the conference championship. The Eagles went on to defeat second-seeded King’s, 3-0, to capture the title. Eastern has won three of the previous four conference titles.
The 2018 MAC Freedom Championship seeds were: No. 1 Eastern, No. 2 King’s, No. 3 Manhattanville and No. 4 Misericordia.
Stevens finished the 2018 season with an 7-0 record in the Empire 8 and went on to win its second-straight conference title with a 2-0 win over Nazareth in the conference final.
Eastern earned the conference’s automatic qualifier (AQ) to the NCAA Division III Championship. Stevens also competed in the national tournament as the Empire 8 AQ. Eastern defeated Mary Washington and Franklin & Marshall to advance to the sectional semifinal. The Eagles then fell to Rochester, 1-0. Stevens won its opening game against Gordon, but then fell in the second round to Tufts.
Wilkes extended its postseason play in the ECAC Division III Championship. The Colonels fell to Grove City in the first round.
The 2019 season is set to begin on Friday, Aug. 30. The 2019 MAC Freedom Men’s Soccer Championship is set for Nov. 6-9.
Eastern was ranked No. 15 and Stevens was ranked No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III Preseason Poll.
