MAC Weekly Awards Announcement (October 14, 2024)

21 student-athletes were recognized for performances from Oct. 7 – Oct. 14

NEWTOWN, Pa. (Conference News) – The Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) has announced its conference weekly award recipients for the week ending October 13, 2024. A total of 21 student-athletes were recognized for performances from Oct. 7, 2024 to Oct. 13, 2024.

CROSS COUNTRY (#MACxc)
MAC Men's Runner of the Week
Tom Flear (Widener / Jr. / Mullica, Hill, N.J.) had a first-place weekend at the DeSales Invitational on Saturday morning. Flear would capture first overall with a final time of 26:07.1 while averaging a 5:15 mile pace. Flear would also win by nearly seven seconds.

MAC Women's Runner of the Week
Ellie Kozich (DeSales / Fy. / Mountain Top, Pa.) had a tremendous showing at the DeSales Invitational placing first overall with a 6K time of 22:28.3. She led the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish and recorded the fifth fastest time on the DeSales course by a Bulldogs runner.
 

FIELD HOCKEY (#MACfh)
MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Chelsea Carpenter (Messiah / Fy., M / Lewisberry, Pa.) scored her first and second career goals in the second quarter of the Falcons' 7-0 win over Eastern University. Carpenter also added an assist on the seventh goal of the game, picking up five points in the Falcons' road win.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Belle Fields (York / Sr., GK / Centreville, Md.) played 140 minutes of scoreless field hockey in goal for the Spartans as they went 1-1. In the 1-0 win over #9 Cortland, Fields made five saves against the Red Dragons. Fields made a pair of saves in the final four minutes of the game after the Spartans took a 1-0 lead. The win was her 40th career victory as she is now one win short of tying the school record of 41. In the 1-0 shootout loss on Saturday, Fields was outstanding over the 80 minutes of play for York as she recorded eight saves in the run of play. The eight saves were tied for her second-highest total of the year. She is credited with her 24th career shutout as she continues to extend her own school record. For the season, Fields is 9-4 with seven shutouts. She owns a 0.59 goals-against average and a save percentage of .877. 

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Morganne Dee (Arcadia / Sr., M / Buffalo, N.Y.) scored four goals in the opening of conference play for the Knights. Her efforts helped Arcadia take down Delaware Valley 6-1.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Emilia Lopes (Stevens / Jr., D / Stewartsville, N.J.) anchored a defense that allowed just seven shots and three on goal in 6-1 win over DeSales on Saturday. Lopes blocked five shots on penalty corners and led a lockdown corner defensive unit. Key part of the defense that kept shots away from the goal
 

FOOTBALL (#MACfb)
MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Russell Minor-Shaw (King's / Sr., QB / Radnor, Pa.) totaled 262 yards of total offense with four touchdowns in a 35-23 win over Eastern to remain unbeaten in MAC play He completed 9-of-15 passes (60%) for 144 yards and two touchdowns while also running for 118 yards on 12 carries at 9.8 yards per carry with two touchdowns. Holding on to a 28-23 lead, Minor-Shaw ran for a 62-yard touchdown to seal the game with 1:12 remaining in the 4th quarter.

MAC Defensive Player of the Week
Zach Barber (King's / Sr., S / Fishkill, N.Y.) led the King's defense in a 35-23 win over Eastern on Saturday to remain unbeaten in their MAC schedule. He recorded five total tackles, including four solo, with two interceptions and two pass break ups. His first interception shut down Eastern's second drive of the game, while his second ended the Eagles' drive in the final seconds of the fourth quarter to seal the deal in the win. Additionally, he broke up a pass on the first play of the fourth quarter to force a turnover on downs in King's territory.

MAC Special Teams Player of the Week
Connor McLaughlin (Misericordia / Fy. K / Bethlehem, Pa.) kicked two field goals, including the game-winner with six seconds remaining, in a 13-10 win at Albright.  Made a 20-yarder to give the team a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.  Made a 17-yarder to win the game in the fourth quarter.


MEN'S SOCCER (#MACsoc)
MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Ryan Cogill (Alvernia / Sr., F / West Chester, Pa.) had six points in a 1-1 week for the Golden Wolves. All six points came in a 4-0 over Albright on Saturday in which Cogill played a part in each of Alvernia's four goals. Cogill scored Alvernia's first of the night in the 12th minute, and then assisted on the next two goals for the Golden Wolves. He then scored Alvernia's fourth and final goal of the night in the 52nd minute. With his first goal of the night, Cogill broke both Alvernia's career points record and career goals record. The goals record stood for 23 years and the points record was 20 years old. His six points - which came in just 40 minutes played - matched a career-high for Cogill in points. Cogill also recorded three shots in a setback to #10 Montclair State on Wednesday.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Jake Bono (York / So., GK / Marlboro, N.J.) recorded a pair of shutouts during the week as the Spartans extended their win streak to six this past week. Bono began the week with a shutout win over Arcadia. Bono played the first 83:36 of the game as he recorded two saves in the win over the Knights. Bono followed that performance with two saves in the 1-0 win over Eastern in a key Commonwealth road game on Saturday. Bono is 9-0-3 with three full shutouts in 1,061:05 of play in net for the Spartans. He has allowed seven goals as he owns a goals against average of 0.59 and a save percentage of .844%.

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Shane Serio (King's / Sr., M / Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored a pair of goals on six shots, including four on goal. He started the week with a goal on three shots, including three on frame, in a 4-1 win over Marywood on Wednesday. The senior then scored the first goal in a 2-0 win over Delaware Valley on his only shot on frame to secure the Monarchs' first MAC Freedom win of the season on Saturday.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Ben VanValkenburg (King's / Fy., GK / Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) posted a 2-0 shutout win to pick up the first MAC Freedom win over Delaware Valley on Saturday. VanValkenurg made 4 saves in the complete-game shutout.


WOMEN'S SOCCER (#MACsoc)
MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Haley Dougherty (Alvernia / Jr., F / Middletown, Del.) had three points in a 2-0 week for Alvernia. Dougherty assisted on all three of the goals scored by the Golden Wolves this week. In a 1-0 win over William Paterson on Tuesday, Dougherty assisted on the game-winning goal scored by Olivia Malone. Dougherty then connected with Olivia Swartz twice in the first 22 minutes of action in a 3-1 win over Albright on Friday. Dougherty inserted the corners that Swartz finished off to give Alvernia the lead. Dougherty also inserted the corner that led to an Alvernia team goal as an Albright defender kicked the ball into the net in an attempt to clear it in the 22nd minute. With her multi-point game against the Lions, Dougherty made it four straight games with at least one point.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Joss Metz (York / Fy., GK / Sparrows Point, Md.) led the Spartans to a 2-0 win over Eastern University in the Spartans' lone match for the week. In the match, Metz pitched her sixth shutout of the year as she made five saves in the win over the Eagles. In the 57th minute, the Eagles had a free kick just outside of the box. Metz made the save on Olivia Nicholson's shot to keep York on top 1-0. Eastern had another great chance in the 85th minute as the Spartans were whistled for another foul just outside of the box. This time, Metz made a save on Nicole Eveland to preserve the clean sheet for the Spartans. For the season, is 8-2-3 with six shutouts. She owns a 0.57 goals against average while she owns a save percentage of .881 on 52 saves. 

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Sabrina Competiello (Misericordia / Sr., F / East Northport, N.Y.) scored two of the team's first three goals in a 9-0 win over FDU-Florham.  Scored the game-winner at 7:00 and made it 3-0 in the 22nd minute.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week 
Ashlyn Crawford (King's / Jr., GK / Gilbertsville, Pa.) posted a 2-0 shutout win over Delaware Valley to remain unbeaten in conference play. She made two saves in the complete-game shutout, and she is just one of two goalies in the MAC Freedom to keep a clean sheet against conference foes.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (#MACvb)
MAC Commonwealth Offensive Player of the Week
Ann Ofoegbu (Hood / Jr., OH / Fall Waters, W.Va.) led the stampede in the reverse sweep win against Alvernia on Wednesday with her 25 kills and when the Blazers needed to close out sets they kept feeding her knowing she would deliver.

MAC Commonwealth Defensive Player of the Week
Grace Casagrande (Eastern / Gr., L / Coatesville, Pa.) recorded a match-high 18 digs as Eastern claimed a three-set win over MAC Commonwealth rival Stevenson in a rematch of the last three MAC Commonwealth title games. The Eastern defense held the Mustangs to an .056 hitting percentage and the Eagles went 36-of-37 on serve receptions as a group. With the Eastern passers working, the Eagles hit .327 as a team. Casagrande also added five assists. 

MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week
Meghan Peters (Misericordia / Jr., OH / Boothwyn, Pa.) hit .284 with 34 kills and six aces in a 3-0 week.  Had 14 kills in a 3-1 win over Del Val and had 13 kills in a sweep at Rowan.  Had seven kills and three aces in two sets in a sweep of SUNY Canton.

MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week 
Grace Wilson (Delaware Valley / Sr., L / Quakertown, Pa.) led the Aggies defensive efforts tallying 46 total digs across two contests.
